Fireberry hawthorn grows in grassy openings, thickets, and along streams and lakeshores on upland sandy, silty, or loamy soil. Open-grown specimens develop into a large, broad shrub or a small, rounded tree. The flowers are attractive, but not pleasantly fragrant.
